What Do Your Time and Money Say About You?
Show me your calendar and checkbook (ok, online bank account), and I will tell you your values.
Have you ever heard something along those lines?
If someone asked you what was important to you in life, you might say something like….
Family time, kindness, health, tradition, faith, security, achievement, equality, justice, etc.
But does the way you currently spend your time and money REALLY reflect those values?
One of the best ways to live a healthy lifestyle is to be authentic in who you are.
That includes carrying out actions that line up with your values.
In other words…Practice what you preach,
Walk the talk,
And put your money where your mouth is.
While we all could certainly make better use of some of our time, part of the delay in action has to do with our mindset.
Research has shown that we tend to overestimate what we can get done in a short amount of time and underestimate what we can get done in a longer amount of time, like 10 years.
Raise your hand if that sounds like you. (My hand is raised!)
This leads to having intentions of doing meaningful things, but having the time pass without achieving our goals because our days are filled with less-important activities (scrolling social media, mindlessly checking emails, watching videos…).
Not only that, but many of us (myself included) spend a surprising amount of money on convenience food, home decor, or things from Amazon.
What if you invested more time and money into things that would actually change your life?
Like investing in your wellbeing, your mental health, or your community…
Not only would your life change, but spending your money on goods and services that support your values has the power to change the world we all live in.
One of the most powerful ways to make your voice heard and your values known is to “vote with your dollar.”
If you want to support the environment, spend your money on clean energy sources, products that are reusable and sustainably made, food that is sustainably and humanely sourced, etc.
Support fair labor practices by spending your dollar with companies that are known to treat their employees well.
If you value your community, shop small to support your local economy and local entrepreneur’s dreams, while keeping your hard earned money out of the hands of Big Business.
Support your value of human connection and relationships by spending less time scrolling through social media and more time on family game nights, or Zoom-date calls with friends.
Prioritize your value of physical and mental health by blocking out a regular slot on your calendar for exercise.
Plan your self care, and stick with your plan.
Show your value of growth and achievement by setting big goals, and actually going after them.
Write the book. Be an artist. Start the business. Join the class.
What ever it is you have been “meaning to do,” do it now.
Often these things get put off or never put into action because you think you just don’t have enough time.
Here’s the hard truth…
It’s not that you don’t have enough time, it’s that it’s not high enough on your priority list.
Action items for this week:
- Make a list of your top 5 values. (Need some help? Check out this massive list of values to help get you thinking)
- For each of your 5 values, write down two ways you can take action to support those values.
