Why You Need a Health Coach

You may have seen the term “health coach” floating around on social media, in magazine articles, or on TV.  It seems to be gaining popularity and recognition.  However, I often find when I tell someone that I’m a health coach, they have absolutely no idea what I actually do for a living.

If you have not ever sought the guidance of a health coach, I’m here to tell you…you are missing out.

A health coach is the best investment you can make in yourself.  The return on this investment will last a lifetime.

Now you might be asking, “Why would I need a health coach?”

Let me show you.

A health coach is:

  • The difference between falling off the wagon (again) and finally getting the results you want
  • The difference between feeling alone and feeling supported
  • The difference between knowing something and doing it
  • The difference between I want to do it and I did it
  • A master of habit change
  • Someone who stretches you to achieve goals you never dreamed were possible
  • The best gift you could ever give your body, mind, and soul

The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, the largest nutrition school in the country, defines a health coach as “a wellness authority and supportive mentor who motivates individuals to cultivate positive health choices. Health coaches educate and support clients to achieve their health goals through lifestyle and behavior adjustments.” To put it simply, health coaches, like me, are highly educated guides in the fields of nutrition, wellness, bio-individuality and mentoring.

A Health Coach is a wellness authority and supportive mentor who helps others feel their best by providing personalized healthy changes in lifestyle and food that will meet the individual client’s unique needs and health goals.

The great thing about health coaching is that it’s not a one size fits all approach.  When you work with a health coach, you are going to get personalized guidance and support unique to YOU.

Many health coaches specialize in certain areas of health and wellness, so it’s important to look for someone who fits with the goals you are trying to accomplish.

Many Health Coaches provide their services in private coaching practices with one-on-one and group coaching programs.  The best part is that you can often work with a health coach conveniently from the comfort of your own home through phone calls or video chats.

Health Coaches also emphasize holistic health to include many areas of your life that impact your long-term health which may include your relationships, career, spirituality, and physical activity.

Let’s break down the roles of the health coach and the client.

As a health coach, my role is to:

  • Provide you with resources and knowledge to accomplish your health goals
  • Offer you support, guidance, encouragement, and feedback
  • Provide a safe place where you can express yourself and feel heard
  • Challenge you to create the life of your dreams
  • Stretch you outside of your comfort zone to help you take massive action toward accomplishing your goals

As my client, your role is to:

  • Make your health and well-being a priority
  • Trust your Coach and be open to new ideas
  • Be honest in your communication
  • Show up ready to take action
  • Ask questions as they come up

With the average visit with a doctor lasting just 8 minutes, wouldn’t it be great to also have a supportive expert who has the luxury of more time to work with you in your corner?

Health coach for the win!

The average health coaching session is 50 minutes, meeting twice a month.  In that extended amount of time, you are able to have in-depth conversations with your health coach and really dig down to the root cause of your health and well-being challenges.

While health coaches are NOT replacements for regular visits with your primary health care provider, your health coach can be a partner in your treatment plan, offering additional support and guidance in reaching your health goals.

Certified health coaches are trained in dietary theories and lifestyle coaching techniques allowing them to assist you in digging deep to find out what is holding you back and what is going to bring you success in reaching your health goals.  Health coaching focuses not only on the food you eat, but also your lifestyle (including exercise, sleep, stress management, and much more) to assist you in reaching your health-related goals.

Whether your goal is to lose weight, increase energy, get a handle on managing your stress, or just to improve your health, working with a health coach will help you find what is right for your unique body, see your experience through a fresh perspective, and help you to build healthy habits that align with how you want to feel every single day.

Health coaches assist those who want to change their behaviors in order to improve their health and keep lifestyle-related illnesses at bay.

Now that you know what is health coach is, it’s important to define what a health coach is NOT.

A health coach is NOT a doctor. Health coaches cannot diagnose conditions, prescribe medications or recommend lower or higher doses of your current medications.

A health coach is NOT a therapist.  While great at listening and providing you support and guidance, a health coach cannot diagnose mental health conditions or prescribe medications.

Many health coaches are NOT personal trainers.  Although some might be, a personal trainer certification is needed to make that designation. It’s important to do your research, so you know what your health coach specializes in and what certifications they hold.

Above all, health coaches want to help you succeed.  They will support you through the process without making you feel small.  They understand that your journey is unique.  Health coaches will help make it easy to follow through with your aspirations to improve your health.  They will guide you through any roadblocks that come between you and your health goals.

In a day and age when 1 in 5 people will die of a lifestyle related disease, we desperately need to harness the power within ourselves to influence our health outcomes.

With diabetes, heart disease, and obesity at a record high, NOW is the time to take control of your health and well-being.

Health coaches serve an imperative role in helping you find your way back to health through nutritional and lifestyle guidance.

Are you ready to take back control of your health and well-being?
